The Status of the Non-Muslim Communities in the Ottoman Empire: A Non-Orientalised Decolonial Approach

With a focus on the key developments and critical junctures that shaped reshaped relationship between Ottomans its non-Muslim subject communities, this paper seeks to understand dynamics rationale behind Ottoman policies practices vis-a-vis communities. It will do so by offering periodisation of rule along four major pathways, each which also provides title respective section. The first period is referred as structural exclusion toleration over centuries, from conquest territories their incorporation into imperial domain. second phase entitled integration via politics recognition basically covers Tanzimat era (1838-1876). third put under heading coercive domination control, roughly corresponding Hamidian Period (1876-1908). And finally, last concerned with Young Turks regime (1908-1918), discussing towards non-Muslims communities framed nation-building nation-destruction.
